Cheaha Mountain, Alabama

Elevation 2,405 feet

Summit Date:  May 30, 1997

Thanks to a wooden way-side sign along State Route 281 announcing the location of Cheaha State Park we took a detour on our travels to check out this highpoint. Don't stop until you reach the observation tower. This excursion--an attempt to kill time--would soon become a "peak bagging" addiction.

Located in Cheaha State Park (established in 1933) the derivation of the highpoint's name is unknown. It is possible that it comes from the Choctaw Indian word chaha meaning "high".

Cheaha Mountain is located approximately 25 miles S of Anniston in the Cheaha State Park area of Talladega National Forest.  The entrance gate is open 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., while the park is open year-round.  There is a $1.00 per person day use fee.
